Chenoa Flippen is Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts and Sciences, where she serves as Director of the Center for the Study of Ethnicity Race and Immigration (CSERI) and Undergraduate Chair of Sociology. Her academic home is anchored in the Department of Sociology at 231 McNeil building.
Her research spans three interconnected domains:
- Racial and ethnic inequality in U.S. neighborhood and metropolitan contexts
- Life-course and aging dynamics among minority populations
- Hispanic immigrant adaptation in emerging Southern destinations
Recent publications reveal strong thematic continuity in transnational migration studies, with emphasis on labor trajectories of immigrant women (2023), Mexico-U.S. aging linkages (2022), and innovative 2024 research on Vivir Racionado documenting undocumented Latinos' economic survival strategies through informal savings groups. Her work consistently exposes structural barriers to Hispanic wealth accumulation.
Award recognition includes:
- Provost’s Award for Distinguished PhD Teaching and Mentoring (2021)
Her leadership extends to directing CSERI while shaping undergraduate sociology curriculum as department chair. Current projects examine undocumented migrant labor markets and transnational elder care systems, with recent policy forum appearances addressing Latino employment instability and gendered migration determinants.
