Dr. Chrissy Yee Lau is an Assistant Professor of History in the School of Social, Behavioral, and Global Studies at California State University, Monterey Bay's College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. She brings an interdisciplinary perspective to her teaching and research, drawing from History, Asian American Studies, and Feminist Studies.
Dr. Lau's research focuses on U.S. History with specializations in Asian American History, Women's History, and Public History. Her work examines Japanese American women's politics, community building during periods of racial segregation, and the intersections of gender, race, and trans-Pacific relations. She is particularly known for her forthcoming book manuscript, New Women of Empire: Gendered politics and Racial Uplift in Interwar Japanese America, which explores how Japanese American youth navigated identity and community leadership during the exclusion era.
During the pandemic, Dr. Lau co-edited The Auntie Sewing Squad Guide to Mask Making, Radical Care, and Racial Justice and developed the Auntie Sewing Squad Oral History Archive, connecting historical traditions of community care with contemporary mutual aid efforts. Her scholarly work demonstrates a consistent commitment to linking academic research with community engagement and social justice.
Dr. Lau teaches courses including SBS 114: Women and Social Change in the U.S., SBS 322: Asian American Women's History, SBS 364: The Japanese American Internment Camps, and SBS 386: Social and Political Histories of California. Her teaching emphasizes how historical narratives shape contemporary understandings of identity, community, and social justice.
