Shirley Shmerling

Shirley Shmerling is a Senior Lecturer II in the Department of Operations & Information Management at the Isenberg School of Management, University of Massachusetts Amherst. She holds a PhD in Management Science from UMass Amherst (1994), an MSc in Industrial Engineering & Management from Technion Israel Institute of Technology (1987), and a BSc in Computer Science & Information Systems from Technion (1985).

Her research focuses on online education technologies and strategic management of innovation. Teaching specialties include information systems governance, business analytics, quality management, and mathematical modeling for business applications.

Shmerling has authored influential papers on healthcare IT strategy, virtual team effectiveness in online education, and constructivist pedagogy. She has held academic roles at UMass since 2004, including prior positions at Mount Holyoke College (2002-2008). Her work emphasizes practical applications of technology in education and organizational processes.
