Shirley Masterson is a Senior Lecturer and Course Lead for the BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy course at Sheffield Hallam University's College of Health, Wellbeing and Life Sciences. She specializes in rheumatological and musculo-skeletal conditions, research methods (particularly quantitative approaches), and supporting students with disabilities. She joined the university in 2007 as Placement Lead and became Course Lead in 2014. Shirley holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Rheumatological Conditions (Keele University, 1999) and an MSc in Health and Social Care (Sheffield Hallam, 2006).
Her teaching and research focus on occupational therapy practice, including a pilot study on resilience in the cancer workforce (with Macmillan) and evaluating joint protection advice for osteoarthritis patients. She is actively involved in placement support, digital storytelling projects for students facing academic challenges, and Basic Life Support training.
Publications highlight her contributions to occupational therapy education, musculoskeletal rehabilitation, and communication in healthcare settings.
