Shirin M. Rai is a Distinguished Research Professor of Politics and International Relations at SOAS, University of London, and a Fellow of the British Academy. She specializes in interdisciplinary research on gender, governance, development, and the intersections of politics and performance. Her work explores social reproduction, care economies, and feminist international political economy. Currently, she is writing two books: Depletion: The Human Cost of Care (Oxford University Press) and Doing Politics Sideways (Routledge). Recent publications include Performing Representation: Women Members in the Indian Parliament (Oxford University Press, 2019) and contributions to the Oxford Handbook of Politics and Performance.
Her research focuses on three key areas: feminist international political economy (analyzing the costs of social reproductive work), gender and political institutions (e.g., parliamentary dynamics), and politics and performance (e.g., the role of ceremony and ritual). She supervises PhD students in gender and politics, politics and performance, parliamentary anthropology, and feminist political economy.
Rai’s recent projects include studies on the impact of COVID-19 on older people and carers in Coventry and Leicester, and analyses of care work in global contexts. Her work emphasizes the need for transformative policy frameworks addressing care depletion and social inequality.
