Professor Shireenjit Johl is a faculty member at Griffith University's Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics within the Business School. She holds roles as Deputy Head of Department and Deputy Director of the Academy of Excellence in Financial Crime Investigation and Compliance. Her academic journey includes a PhD from the University of Melbourne, alongside certifications as a CPA Australia member. She has held positions at Deakin University, RMIT, and Malaysian institutions before joining Griffith in 2021.
Her research focuses on audit markets, corporate governance, board diversity, ESG disclosures, and financial crime. Key projects include studies on green bond markets, gender diversity impacts on ESG reporting, and assurance quality in sustainability contexts. She has secured grants from entities like CPA Australia, Citi Foundation, and the Asian Development Bank Institute.
Professor Johl actively supervises PhD and Masters students, mentoring over a dozen candidates on topics ranging from CSR disclosures to climate risk. Her professional affiliations include memberships with the American Accounting Association and Griffith Asia Institute. She speaks multiple languages, including Malay and Punjabi, and contributes to policy discussions on financial crime and governance in the Asia-Pacific region.
