Shiori Shakuto is a Lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Sydney, working part-time on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. She holds a PhD from the Australian National University, a MSc from the University of Oxford, and an LLB from the Australian National University. Her research focuses on feminist and public anthropology, examining themes such as migration, gender, waste management, and household practices. Shiori’s work often involves interdisciplinary collaboration, including projects with scientists, engineers, and artists.
Her first book explores Japanese retirement migration to Malaysia, challenging conventional work-life balance narratives. Current projects investigate transnational plastic waste dynamics, emphasizing gendered labor and global inequality. Shiori collaborates with institutions in Japan, Singapore, and Australia, and has held roles at Tokyo College (University of Tokyo) and the National University of Singapore.
Teaching includes courses on anthropology’s role in addressing global issues, economy-culture intersections, gender studies, and migration. She advises students on topics ranging from refugee experiences to sustainability in fashion. Awards include the Asia Research Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship and the Evans Fellowship. Shiori actively engages with media and public platforms to disseminate research findings.
