Dr. Shinu Anna Abraham serves as Professor of Anthropology at St. Lawrence University, teaching core courses including Introduction to Archaeology, ancient civilizations, archaeology and identity, and methodological theory. Her research centers on ancient Indian Ocean trade dynamics and their role in shaping early South Indian social complexity.
Her primary research domains encompass:
- Material culture analysis of iron and glass production systems
- Reconstruction of Indian Ocean exchange networks through bead archaeology
- Theoretical frameworks for state formation processes
- Craft technology and social complexity emergence
Dr. Abraham has significantly contributed to scholarly discourse through editorial leadership, notably the 2013 volume Connections and Complexity: New Approaches to the Archaeology of South and Central Asia and a special issue of Archaeological Research in Asia on bead trade. Her fieldwork spans Egypt, Israel, India, and the United States, demonstrating transnational research scope. Current projects focus on Southern Andhra Pradesh's industrial archaeology and South Indian bead craftsmanship, advancing understanding of ancient technological traditions within global exchange systems.
