Professor Damian Robinson is the Director of the Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology at the University of Oxford, where he leads research initiatives at the intersection of classical archaeology and maritime studies. His work focuses on ancient trade, urbanism, and maritime-terrestrial interfaces.
- Current Research: Directing the OCMA-IEASM excavation of the 5th century BC shipwreck (Wreck 43) from Heracleion, Egypt, and conducting building surveys and excavations in Insula VI.i of Pompeii, Italy.
- Teaching: Convenes the undergraduate FHS option Mediterranean Maritime Archaeology, lectures on Urbanisation and Change in Complex Societies, and offers postgraduate courses on Maritime Societies, Maritime Archaeology up to AD 1000, and Methods and Techniques in Maritime Archaeology.
Doctoral Supervision: Supervises research topics including shipwrecks, ports, maritime cultural heritage, and methodological approaches. Current students study topics such as seafaring traditions in Gujarat, decolonizing maritime archaeology in Hong Kong, and ancient Egyptian boat models. Past students have completed theses on maritime landscapes in Crete, deep-sea archaeology in Cyprus, and Iron Age mooring practices in the Mediterranean.
Interdisciplinary Contributions: Integrates archaeological science techniques (e.g., stable isotope analysis, DNA analysis) into maritime research, emphasizing the materiality of trade and cross-regional interaction across the Mediterranean, Europe, Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean, and the Western Pacific.
