Carlos de Juan Fuertes is a researcher in the Department of Prehistory and Archaeology at the University of Valencia, Faculty of Geography and History. He holds a PhD from the same institution (2013) and is actively involved in underwater and nautical archaeology, with a focus on ancient Mediterranean maritime traditions. He serves as Scientific Director of the Bou Ferrer Shipwreck Project and has taught in the Master’s program in Nautical and Underwater Archaeology at the University of Cádiz.
His research interests include Maritime Archaeology, Underwater Archaeology, Naval Architecture, Roman and Phoenician Archaeology, and Mediterranean trade networks. His work emphasizes the construction techniques of ancient vessels, particularly from the Classical and Roman periods, and explores the cultural interactions reflected in shipbuilding traditions across the Iberian Peninsula and the wider Mediterranean.
His recent publications (2021–2024) focus on key shipwrecks such as El Sec, Mazarrón 2, and Bou Ferrer, analyzing hull construction, cargo composition, and conservation methods. These studies reveal insights into Phoenicio-Punic influence on Iberian shipbuilding, Roman trade in fish sauces and amphorae, and innovative preservation techniques like PEG treatment and lyophilization.
Carlos de Juan has collaborated on international projects, including work on the Mazotos wreck in Cyprus and the Ouest-Giraglia 2 in France. His research integrates fieldwork, experimental archaeology, and digital visualization to reconstruct ancient maritime practices.
He has contributed to reports on site protection, UNESCO best practices, and public outreach for the Bou Ferrer site, highlighting his commitment to heritage conservation and dissemination.
