Deborah Carlson is the Sara W. and George O. Yamini Endowed Family Chair in Nautical Archaeology and Professor at Texas A&M University's Department of Anthropology. She also serves as President of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA) and teaches courses in Greek/Roman archaeology, nautical archaeology, and Latin. Her research focuses on ancient Mediterranean seafaring, maritime trade, and shipwreck analysis.
Education: PhD in Classical Archaeology from the University of Texas at Austin (2004); MA in Classical Archaeology from the University of Arizona. Fieldwork includes excavations in Greece, Turkey, and Italy, notably leading projects at Tektaş Burnu and Kızılburun shipwrecks. She has authored/co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed articles and books on topics such as marble column transportation, amphora trade networks, and Byzantine shipbuilding.
Research trends in her articles emphasize interdisciplinary approaches combining archaeology, material science (e.g., isotopic analysis), and historical context. Her work highlights the economic and cultural significance of maritime connectivity in antiquity, particularly Roman and Hellenistic eras. Major contributions include analysis of the Kızılburun marble column wreck and the Tektaş Burnu amphora cargo.
