Dr. Marike van Aerde is an Assistant Professor in the World Archaeology department at Leiden University, specializing in ancient trade networks spanning Egypt, the Indian Ocean, and the Silk Road. Her research integrates ceramic analysis, petroglyph documentation, and Network Theory to explore transregional exchange processes. She collaborates internationally on projects like Archaeologists Connected, emphasizing interdisciplinary methods (GIS, AI, archaeometry) and heritage preservation.
Education: PhD (2015) in archaeological exchange processes between Egypt and Rome; MA in Classics (Radboud University, cum laude); Postdoctoral Byvanck Fellowship (2017-2019). Active in public archaeology through documentaries and blogs.
Research focuses on Indian Ocean trade, Silk Road ceramics, and rock art preservation in Pakistan’s Karakorum mountains. Notable projects include the Karakorum Rescue Project (Prince Claus Grant collaboration) and Open Access publications in Archaeometry. Awards include the LeidenGlobal Seed Grant (2019).
Teaching roles include the Honours Academy and Leiden Leadership Programme. She advocates for Open Access and societal relevance of archaeology, addressing modern issues through historical frameworks.
