Dr Sherzod Muminov is an Associate Professor in Japanese History at the University of East Anglia, affiliated with the School of History and Art History, the East Centre, and the Centre for Japanese Studies. His research focuses on modern Japanese history, Cold War dynamics, and transnational migration, particularly the Siberian Internment of Japanese POWs (1945–1956). He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and has conducted research in Japan, Russia, and the US. His award-winning book Eleven Winters of Discontent (2022) redefined understanding of Soviet-Japanese Cold War relations and won the 2024 John Whitney Hall Prize.
Education: BA (International Relations, Uzbekistan), MA (International Politics, Manchester), MA (International Area Studies, Tsukuba), PhD (Cambridge). He has held postdoctoral positions at Cambridge and visiting roles at Tohoku University. His work bridges archival research in Japanese, Russian, and English, emphasizing transnational encounters and liminal spaces in history.
Research interests include Japanese communism, Soviet POW camps, and the global history of Cold War sympathizers. His current project explores Soviet sympathizers globally using multilingual sources. Awards include the Murayama Tsuneo Memorial Award (2016) and PROSE Award finalist (2023).
