Sherry S. Yu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Arts, Culture and Media at the University of Toronto, with a secondary appointment in the Faculty of Information. She holds a Ph.D. in Communication from Simon Fraser University. Her research focuses on multiculturalism, media representation, and digital storytelling, particularly in diasporic contexts. Yu has authored major works including Diasporic Media beyond the Diaspora (2018) and co-edited Ethnic Media in the Digital Age (2019). Her work examines how ethnic media negotiate cultural identity, social integration, and global migration patterns through traditional and digital platforms.
Yu’s research has been published in journals such as Journalism Studies, Television & New Media, and Canadian Journal of Communication. She currently serves UTSC and UTSG campuses, contributing to interdisciplinary conversations at the intersection of media studies, sociology, and cultural policy.
Her scholarly contributions highlight the role of media in shaping diasporic communities’ visibility and agency within host societies. Yu’s ongoing projects include investigations into algorithmic bias in ethnic media distribution and the evolving role of digital platforms in multicultural journalism.
