Shernaz Bamji is a Professor at the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Cellular & Physiological Sciences. She leads the Neuroscience Research Group and focuses on understanding synaptic mechanisms critical to nervous system function and disease.
Educational Background:
- BSc/MSc, University of Toronto
- PhD, Montreal Neurological Institute – McGill University
- Postdoctoral Fellow, University of California, San Francisco
Research Interests center on the molecular regulation of synaptic connectivity, including:
- Role of DHHC palmitoylating enzymes in structural and functional plasticity
- Function of cadherin adhesion complexes in synapse formation and addiction-related behaviors
- Mechanisms linking synaptic dysfunction to psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders (schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, autism, anxiety, addiction)
Scientific Awards:
- Tula Foundation Investigator
- CIHR New Investigator
- MSFHR Scholar
Her lab employs cultured hippocampal neurons and genetically modified mouse models to explore transsynaptic signaling, synaptic elimination, and their implications for learning, memory, and disease therapies.
