Sherif Elshahawi

Sherif Elshahawi is an Associate Professor at the Chapman University School of Pharmacy, focusing on natural product discovery and anti-infectious drug development. He earned his Bachelor of Pharmacy from Cairo University (2000), Master's in Pharmacognosy from the University of Mississippi (2006), and Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Oregon Health & Science University (2012).

Research Interests intersect Natural Products Chemistry, Biosynthesis, and Biocatalysis, targeting novel antibiotics and biomedical tools. His lab explores:

• Isolation of natural products from untapped microbial niches
• Biosynthetic gene cluster characterization
• Enzyme engineering for drug functionalization
• Anti-infective and neuroprotective therapeutics

Recent Publications highlight advancements in bioorthogonal peptide modification, regiospecific antibiotic synthesis, and neuroprotective terphenyl compounds. He has secured NIH funding for his work on microbial natural products.
