Shen Qing is a Researcher at the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology, Uppsala University. She completed her PhD on leisure activities among older working-class queer men in Shanghai, exploring queer aging and subjectivity through ethnographic research. Previously, she worked as a journalist in China. Her research focuses on queer anthropology, East Asian studies, and social gerontology.
Education: PhD candidate in Cultural Anthropology at Uppsala University (since 2020). Professional background includes five years in journalism across Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou.
Research interests center on queer aging, working-class queer communities in urban China, and intersections of culture, politics, and identity. She actively hosts the New Books Network podcast.
Publications include her doctoral monograph (2024) and peer-reviewed reviews in the Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute (2025) and Positions (2024). Her work engages with postcolonial politics, cultural resilience, and decolonial methodologies.
