Shelly Lundberg is the Leonard Broom Professor of Demography and Distinguished Professor of Economics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She holds dual appointments in the Department of Economics and the Broom Center for Demography. Her research focuses on labor economics, family economics, and gender studies, emphasizing topics like decision-making dynamics, educational inequality, and policy impacts on family structures. Lundberg has held leadership roles, including presidency of the Society of Labor Economists and the European Society for Population Economics, and has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the American Economic Association Distinguished Fellow and membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
She earned a B.A. (First Class Honours) from the University of British Columbia and a Ph.D. in Economics from Northwestern University. Her career includes prior positions at the University of Washington and Princeton University. Lundberg's work has been supported by major grants from NIH, NSF, Russell Sage, and MacArthur Foundation.
Her research explores intersections of family structure, economic behavior, and public policy, with recent projects addressing gender gaps in education, child decision-making, and the economic implications of state-provided elderly care. She has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles and co-edited influential volumes in family economics. Current roles include Research Fellow at IZA and associate editor of the Journal of Demographic Economics.
