Martha Bailey is a Professor of Economics at the University of Michigan and a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). She contributes to networks such as the Inequality: Measurement, Interpretation, and Policy (MIP) group and has held affiliations with the Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan and the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Program.

Her research integrates labor economics, demography, health economics, and economic history to analyze long-term societal trends in the U.S. Key themes include the economic impacts of family planning, the effects of Great Society programs on human capital, and historical determinants of health and labor outcomes. She has secured grants from prestigious institutions such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), Ford Foundation, and Russell Sage Foundation.
Bailey’s work has been recognized with notable awards, including the IZA Prize, Arthur H. Cole Prize, and CESifo Distinguished Research Affiliate Award. She has also received two college-level awards for outstanding teaching. Currently, she serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Economic Literature and Demography.
