Raquel Fernández is a Professor in the Department of Economics at New York University and holds affiliations with ESOP at the University of Oslo, the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), and the Institute of Labor Economics (IZA). Previously tenured at the London School of Economics and Boston University, she maintains active visiting roles globally.
Her academic credentials include a B.A. Magna Cum Laude in Economics from Princeton University (1981) and a Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University (1988).
Professor Fernández specializes in the intersection of cultural dynamics and economic outcomes, with concentrated expertise in gender-inclusive development frameworks, inequality measurement, and political economy. Her research critically examines how societal norms shape economic behavior—particularly in education attainment disparities and women's rights evolution—using rigorous empirical methodologies to inform policy interventions.
