Shelly Cline is a Lecturer at the University of Kansas and Director of Education at the Midwest Center for Holocaust Education. She holds a Ph.D. in History from the University of Kansas (2014), specializing in Modern European History, Women and Gender History, and British History. Her dissertation, “Women at Work: The SS Aufseherinnen and the Gendered Perpetration of the Holocaust,” examines gendered roles in Holocaust perpetration. Dr. Cline has taught courses such as Gendering the Holocaust and Antisemitism and the West, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to historical analysis.
Her research focuses on Holocaust history, gender studies, and historical memory, with fieldwork in archives in Hamburg, Lohheide, Fürstenberg, and Auschwitz. She has presented widely, including at the German Studies Association Conferences and the Berkshire Conference on the History of Women, Genders, and Sexualities. Her work explores themes like Holocaust tourism, gendered justice, and the representation of women in perpetrator roles.
Dr. Cline has received numerous teaching awards, including the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award (2011) and the Exemplary Teaching Award (2008). She has held leadership roles in academic organizations, such as President of the Graduate Organization of Humanities and Western Civilization at KU (2011–2012). Her service extends to professional development initiatives, including the Holocaust Academic Roundtable and collaborations with institutions like the FBI and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
