Sarah Cushman is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History at Northwestern University and Director of the Holocaust Educational Foundation of Northwestern University (HEFNU). She specializes in Holocaust history, gender and sexuality studies, and the history of Central/Eastern Europe. Her current book project, Women in Auschwitz, is under contract with Indiana University Press and expands on her doctoral dissertation, The Women of Birkenau (Clark University, 2010). She co-edits the Routledge Handbook of Auschwitz-Birkenau (2025) and serves as co-editor in chief of Holocaust Studies: A Journal of Culture and History.
Previously, she held roles as Head of Educational Programming at Clark University’s Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (2013–2016) and Director of Youth Education at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County (2007–2013). Her research has been supported by prestigious fellowships and grants, focusing on Holocaust education and historical interpretation.
Her teaching and research emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to Holocaust studies, including pedagogical strategies for engaging students with complex historical narratives. She actively contributes to global Holocaust education initiatives through HEFNU, aiming to expand academic programs and increase student engagement with the subject.
