Shelley Turner is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at Monash University's School of Primary and Allied Health Care. She holds an Adjunct Senior Lecturer title and is an Early Career Researcher specializing in youth justice and criminology. Her academic career began in 2015, following over 15 years in youth justice roles, including clinical management and policy development for New South Wales and Victoria. She led Australia's first Youth Drug and Alcohol Court program and contributed to national initiatives like the Keep Them Safe Senior Officers Group. Turner’s PhD (completed 2019) focused on youth justice clients’ perspectives on case management, published in the top 5% of Altmetric-tracked research. She currently investigates field education challenges, aggression management in clinical placements, and youth justice policy. Turner leads a national study on the pandemic’s impact on social work field education, funded by ACEN.
Education: PhD in Social Work (Monash University, 2016–2019).
Research Interests: Prioritizing youth voices in justice systems, case management effectiveness, and student safety during field placements. Her work addresses systemic gaps in youth justice policy and education, emphasizing participatory approaches. Collaborations include RMIT Social Work and the National Field Education Network.
Grants & Projects: Principal Investigator for studies on after-hours youth bail decisions (Monash University, 2019–2020) and aggression management modules (2019). She co-authored a book on co-production in criminal justice (Routledge, 2022) and contributed to policy discussions on youth justice reforms.
