Shelley McKellar is the Jason A. Hannah Chair in the History of Medicine and Professor in the Department of History (joint with the Department of Surgery) at Western University. She holds a PhD from the University of Toronto (1999) and has been a leading scholar in medical history, focusing on surgical instruments, medical technology, and biographical studies of medical pioneers like Gordon Murray. Her work bridges historical analysis with contemporary medical practice, emphasizing the role of material culture in shaping medical knowledge.
McKellar curates Western’s Medical Artifact Collection, a teaching resource showcasing late 19th- and 20th-century medical practices. She teaches medical history to students in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and the Faculty of Social Science, integrating themes of class, race, gender, and disability into historical narratives. Her research projects include object-centered studies of surgical instruments and their impact on 19th-century medical practice.
Her major publications include Artificial Hearts (2018), Surgical Limits: The Life of Gordon Murray (2003), and Transforming Dentistry (2022). She has received awards such as the Western Faculty Scholar (2019-2021) and USC Teaching Honour Roll recognition. McKellar actively engages in public scholarship, presenting globally on topics like medical museums, surgical history, and the ethical dimensions of medical technology.
