Shelley M. Payne is Marie Betzner Morrow Centennial Chair and Distinguished Teaching Professor at UT Austin's College of Natural Sciences, where she directs infectious disease research. Her work combines genetics and biochemistry to study bacterial virulence mechanisms.
Research focuses on iron/manganese transport systems in enteric pathogens Vibrio cholerae and Shigella flexneri, examining Feo-mediated iron transport, host-pathogen lipid interactions, and gut microbiome influences on virulence regulation.
