Shelley M. Payne is Marie Betzner Morrow Centennial Chair and Distinguished Teaching Professor at UT Austin's College of Natural Sciences, where she directs infectious disease research. Her work combines genetics and biochemistry to study bacterial virulence mechanisms.
Research focuses on iron/manganese transport systems in enteric pathogens Vibrio cholerae and Shigella flexneri, examining Feo-mediated iron transport, host-pathogen lipid interactions, and gut microbiome influences on virulence regulation. Current projects investigate CsrA-mediated environmental regulation in Vibrio.
Publications emphasize bacterial metabolism, host adaptation, and educational methodologies. Laboratory techniques include enteroid modeling and genetic analysis of bacterial systems.
Awards recognize excellence in teaching and educational leadership, including the 2021 Minnie Stevens Piper Professorship and 2014 National ASM Teaching Award.
