Dr. Shelley Griffin is a Professor in the Department of Educational Studies at Brock University's Faculty of Education. She holds a BMus from the University of Prince Edward Island and a MEd and PhD from the University of Alberta. Her research focuses on children's narratives of musical experiences, pre-service music teacher education, narrative inquiry, and faculty mentorship. Prior to her academic roles, she taught elementary music and classroom education in Prince Edward Island.
Professional affiliations include the International Society for Music Education, Canadian Music Educators’ Association, and American Educational Research Association. She is certified in Orff Schülwerk Levels I, II, and III.
Her research explores how music education shapes children’s artistic lives and prepares future teachers. Key themes include embodied learning, teacher candidate narratives, and collaborative scholarship. Recent work examines artistic expression beyond school contexts and the role of music in language development.
Grants include SSHRC-funded projects on creativity through music and literacy integration. Courses taught include arts integration in elementary curricula and music-based arts education methods.
