Professor Sheldon Ben holds the Luc Hoffmann Chair in Field Ornithology and serves as Director of the Edward Grey Institute at the University of Oxford's Department of Zoology. He has led the Department as Head (2016-2021) and Associate Head (2011-2016). His academic journey includes a PhD in Zoology from the University of Sheffield (1990-1993) and a B.A. in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University (1986-1989).
His research focuses on Animal Behaviour, Behavioural Ecology, Ecology, Evolution, and Ornithology. Key awards include the 2022 Fellowship of the Royal Society, the 2020 Linnean Medal, and leadership recognition from Oxford University. He has examined 47 PhD theses across 21 international institutions.
Sheldon Ben has held editorial roles for journals like Journal of Animal Ecology and Animal Behaviour, and served on advisory boards for institutions such as the Netherlands Institute of Ecology and the Max Planck Society. He has delivered prestigious lectures at global conferences, including the International Ornithological Congress (2018).
