Toby Carter is an Associate Professor and Course Leader for Ecology and Conservation in the School of Life Sciences at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge. He teaches across modules in Zoology, Ecology, and Animal Behaviour, and leads the 'Do Numbers Lie?' data storytelling module. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a University Teaching Fellow.

His research centers on fish welfare, human-animal interactions in fisheries, and the use of data and technology in teaching. He is a member of the Applied Ecology Research Group and the Behavioural Ecology Research Group. His recent publications focus on behavioral indicators in marine mammals and farmed fish, highlighting expertise in cognitive behavior, animal welfare assessment, and comparative psychology. The research bridges aquaculture, conservation, and educational innovation.
