Shelby Ellison is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plant and Agroecosystem Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, affiliated with graduate programs in Plant Breeding & Plant Genetics, Agroecology, and Horticulture. She teaches undergraduate courses in hemp science and horticulture.
Research focuses on:
- Genetic characterization of alternative crops
- Hemp germplasm conservation and breeding
- Domestication genomics of specialty crops
- Agroecological adaptation strategies
Current projects identify optimal hemp cultivars and production methods for Wisconsin farmers, leveraging feral populations to expand genetic resources. Publications document genetic diversity in US hemp populations, carrot domestication pathways, and ecological niche modeling of feral cannabis.
Leads field trials at Arlington Agricultural Research Station and collaborates with Indigenous communities on dual-purpose hemp applications. Recent conference presentations highlight genomic approaches to crop improvement and virus resistance screening protocols.
