Sheila Vance is an Associate Professor and founding Director of the Communication in Health Professions Education Unit (COHPE) within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences at Monash University. Her work focuses on education in health professions, particularly nursing education, clinical performance assessment, and interprofessional collaboration. She has contributed to the development of innovative curricula and assessment methods, such as the Integrating Science And Practice (iSAP) task and Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) for internationally qualified nurses.
Her research interests include factors affecting nursing students' academic and clinical performance, cultural competency in healthcare education, and supporting international students in interprofessional teams. Notable projects include studies on undergraduate nursing performance and the implementation of culturally responsive educational models.
Dr. Vance has received the 2021/2023 MNM Research Development Grant and has served as a Chief Investigator in multiple research initiatives. She has also contributed to public lectures on language development within curricula, emphasizing the integration of linguistic and cultural support systems in healthcare education.
Her leadership in COHPE reflects a commitment to advancing communication and educational practices in health professions, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to quality education and equitable healthcare access.
