Dr Sheila M Kidd is a Senior Lecturer in Celtic & Gaelic at the University of Glasgow. Her research focuses on 18th-20th century Scottish Gaelic literature, particularly exploring social and historical dimensions of Gaelic texts and publications. She examines language use in 19th-century Highland contexts, including its contested role in communication, governance, and marginalized communities. Current projects include studies of Farquhar MacDonell’s poetry and Gaelic diaspora literature.
Teaching includes undergraduate courses on Gaelic literature, 19th-century culture, and Gaelic media history. She supervises postgraduate research on topics like Gaelic emigration propaganda and Highland land agitation. Kidd has secured grants such as the Wellcome Trust’s Humanities & Social Science Small Grant (2016) for work on Gaelic language and medical provision in the Highlands.
Publications span over 60 articles, book chapters, and edited volumes on Gaelic cultural history, including co-editing The International Companion to Nineteenth-Century Scottish Literature. She serves as President of the Scottish Gaelic Texts Society and actively engages with Gaelic cultural preservation efforts.
