Dr. Michel Byrne is a Lecturer in Celtic & Gaelic at the University of Glasgow, specializing in Scottish Gaelic literature and cultural history. His research focuses on Gaelic networks from the 18th to 20th centuries, modernist poetry, and the role of women in Gaelic literary traditions. He has co-edited major works like Lìontan Lìonmhor (2019) and contributed to interdisciplinary projects such as the Edinburgh History of Scottish Literature. Byrne teaches courses including Bàrdachd Cogaidh 1930-1950 and convenes Gaelic language courses at Honours level.
His work bridges historical analysis and modern cultural studies, with notable publications on 19th-century poetry collections, transnational Gaelic influences, and forgotten female poets. Byrne actively supervises PhD candidates in Gaelic literature and has presented at international conferences on topics ranging from George Campbell Hay’s trilingual poetry to linguistic exchanges in modernist works.
As a committed educator, he integrates Gaelic-medium teaching with research, emphasizing both traditional and contemporary Gaelic literary expression.
