Sheila Garrett is a Distinguished Instructor and Artistic Facilitator for Double Bass, with a career spanning over four decades. She served as Assistant Principal Bass of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra from 1977 to 2017. Her roles include teaching at Interlochen Summer Arts Camp as a Valade Fellow and coaching with institutions like the Calgary Youth Orchestra and Banff International Festival of Youth Orchestras.
- Education: Diploma from Interlochen Arts Academy, Bachelor of Music Performance (Distinction) from University of Michigan, and Certificate of Advanced Studies from Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Her expertise lies in orchestral performance, chamber music, and pedagogy. She has performed with renowned groups including Calgary Philharmonic, Red Deer Symphony, and Alberta Chamber Players, premiering works like Allan Rae’s bass concerto. Collaborations include the Beau Quartet and Mount Royal Woodwind Quintet, with recordings by CBC.
- Awards: Blatt Seigel Double Bass Prize (student recognition) and Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award.
Her students have secured scholarships and positions in orchestras across Canada, Europe, and the U.S., with eleven joining the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.
