A/Prof Sheila Donnelly is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Life Sciences at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Her research focuses on host-parasite interactions, particularly exploring how helminth parasites manipulate host immune systems and translating this knowledge into autoimmune disease therapies. She holds a PhD in Virology from Trinity College Dublin and conducted postdoctoral work at the National University of Ireland Maynooth.
Key research streams include the development of immunomodulatory peptides from helminths for treating conditions like multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes. Her work has led to discoveries such as the first parasite-derived protein independently activating macrophages without IL-4/IL-13 signaling. She has secured grants from the ARC, NHMRC, and JDRF, focusing on molecular mechanisms of parasite-host interactions and therapeutic applications.
Dr. Donnelly has published extensively in high-impact journals and contributed to book editorships, including Antimicrobial Peptides: Utility Players in Innate Immunity. Her research also explores miRNA biomarkers for parasitic infections. Supervision of postgraduate students and involvement in commercialization efforts highlight her commitment to bridging basic science and clinical applications.
