Dr. Sheila Brownlow is a Professor of Psychology at Catawba College, where she has served since 1990. She holds the rank of Professor since 1999 and has held administrative roles including Director of the First-Year Experience (2012–present), Psychology Department Chair (2010–2024), and Director of the College Honors Program (2001–2010). Her research focuses on social psychology, gender studies, and cognitive processes in social media contexts.
Education: Ph.D. in Psychology from Brandeis University (1990), B.A. in Psychology from University of Massachusetts at Boston (1984).
Research Interests: Includes performance in science/math/spatial skills by gender, emotional/cognitive content in social media, implicit egotism, and body/gait perception effects on social judgments. Her work has explored topics like victim blaming, mental rotation abilities, and language use in Instagram/Twitter.
Awards: Recipient of the Trustee Award (2016), Swink Teaching Award (2002), Jefferson-Pilot Chair (2006–2008), and Top Psychology Professor recognition (2016). Her research has been honored with Alpha Chi and Psi Chi awards.
Teaching & Service: Teaches courses like General Psychology, Social Psychology, and Honors seminars. Serves on committees such as the Faculty Tenure Committee, Institutional Review Board, and Enrollment Management. Leads initiatives in first-year advising, academic policies, and assessment.
Labs/Teams: Active in research mentorship, supervising student practica and internships. Collaborates on grants for programs like First-Gen College Students and Unanue Scholars.
