Shayoni Mitra is a Senior Lecturer in Theatre at Barnard College specializing in performance and politics. Her research examines political theatre in postcolonial contexts, with particular focus on Indian street theatre, feminist performance, and activist traditions. She holds a Ph.D. from New York University and M.A. from Delhi University.
Mitra's current book project, 'Contesting Capital: A History of Political Theatre in Postcolonial Delhi,' analyzes political performance from 1940s independence movements to contemporary feminist theatre. She collaborates with sex worker communities in Maharashtra using theatre for political mobilization.
Teaching connects global performance traditions while exploring intersections of theatre, gender, and power. Awards include:
