Santanu Mitra is a Professor of Accounting at the Department of Accounting, Mike Ilitch School of Business, Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He has held various academic positions including Associate Professor at Montclair State University and Instructor at Louisiana State University. Mitra also serves as Sessional Faculty in the Master of Management Program at the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and has previously served as Interim Chair of the Department of Accounting at Wayne State University.
His educational background includes a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University, an M.B.A. from the University of New Hampshire, and both an M.Com. and B.Com. (Honors in Accountancy) from the University of Calcutta, India. He is also a Chartered Accountant.
Mitra's research focuses on financial accounting, audit, and capital market-based research, with particular interest in earnings management, audit-fee economics, auditor independence, capital market responses to accounting phenomena, and environmental regulations and firm-specific disclosure practices. His work often examines the intersection of political risk, tax avoidance, and corporate governance with financial reporting practices.
His recent publications demonstrate a clear trend toward examining political risk factors in accounting decisions, cryptocurrency taxation, and the impact of global tax regulations. There's also significant focus on earnings management practices, audit pricing determinants, and the relationship between corporate governance mechanisms and financial reporting quality.

Mitra has served as an Associate Editor for the Review of Pacific Basin Financial Markets and Policies and is on the editorial boards of several journals including Review of Accounting and Finance, Journal of Forensic and Investigative Accounting, Oil Gas and Energy Quarterly, and Journal of Public Budgeting Accounting and Financial Management. He is an active reviewer for numerous peer-reviewed journals.
He teaches courses in Financial Accounting, Intermediate Financial Accounting, Financial Statement Analysis, Managerial Accounting, Cost Management, and Corporate Governance, with scheduled courses through 2025 including ACC5110 (Intermediate Financial Accounting II) and ACC7115 (Financial Statement Analysis).
