Shawn Graham is an Associate Professor of Digital Humanities at Carleton University, specializing in digital archaeology and computational creativity. He holds a BA from Wilfrid Laurier University and MA/PhD from the University of Reading, UK. Graham’s research focuses on applying computational methods to archaeology, including agent-based modeling, machine learning, and digital public history. He leads the XLab: Cultural Heritage Informatics Collaboratory and has received grants from SSHRC for projects like 'The Bone Trade' and 'CRANE: Computational Research in the Ancient Near East'. His work addresses ethical issues in the online trade of human remains and antiquities, leveraging AI and neural networks for cultural heritage preservation.
He has authored influential books such as An Enchantment of Digital Archaeology and Failing Gloriously, and co-authored The Historian’s Macroscope. Graham’s teaching spans digital archaeology, public history, and critical making. He advises MA and PhD students on topics ranging from AI ethics to LGBTQ+ archives. His awards include the Archaeological Institute of America’s 2019 Award for Outstanding Work in Digital Archaeology and the Provost’s Fellowship in Teaching (2016).
Graham’s current projects include investigating illicit antiquities trade via knowledge graphs and collaborating on the International Space Station Archaeological Project (ISSAP). His open-access journal Epoiesen and research blog Electric Archaeology showcase his commitment to transparent, innovative scholarship.
