Shawn Donaldson is an Adjunct Research Professor in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Carleton University and the Manager of the Heat Division in the Climate Change and Innovation Bureau at Health Canada. He holds degrees from Carleton University: B.Sc. (Hons.), M.A., and Ph.D.
His research focuses on contaminants' impacts on human health, climate change and health, environmental change and mental health, risk communication, and applying science to public policy. He leads initiatives such as extreme heat protection programs and emergency management plans. Previously, he contributed to Canada’s Northern Contaminants Program and co-chaired the AMAP health expert committee.
Dr. Donaldson’s publications span environmental contaminants in Arctic Canada, Indigenous health research methodologies, and Arctic human health assessments. His work bridges scientific research with policy, emphasizing community engagement and risk communication.
He actively supervises/co-supervises students and participates in peer reviews of research proposals and journal articles. His contributions to international assessments, such as the AMAP Human Health report, highlight his leadership in Arctic environmental health.
