Shawn Datchuk

Shawn Datchuk is an Associate Professor of Special Education at the University of Iowa and serves as the director of the Iowa Reading Research Center (IRRC) within the College of Education. Under his leadership, the IRRC focuses on making reading instruction more accessible for teachers and improving students' ability to learn through reading.

His research interests center around special education, literacy development, and writing instruction, with particular emphasis on sentence construction and cursive handwriting. Datchuk's work bridges practical classroom applications with academic research, developing curriculum materials for K-12 educators focused on improving students' writing abilities.

Datchuk's recent research examines the relationship between cursive handwriting instruction and reading development, analyzing whether cursive instruction can improve overall literacy skills. His current projects include developing evidence-based approaches to handwriting instruction and creating practical resources for teachers struggling with limited instructional time.

As a former K-12 special education teacher, elementary teacher, director of special education, and academic performance director, Datchuk brings extensive practical experience to his academic work. He believes strongly that all students should have access to high-quality literacy instruction.

His advising work focuses on supporting teachers in implementing effective writing instruction, particularly for students who struggle with sentence construction. Datchuk collaborates with school districts to provide technical assistance and translate research findings into practical classroom strategies.

At the Iowa Reading Research Center, Datchuk leads a team dedicated to conducting research, providing technical assistance to schools, and developing resources that bridge the gap between educational research and classroom practice.
