Kelly Johnson is a Lecturer in the School of Teacher Education at San Diego State University (SDSU) and concurrently serves as a classroom teacher and instructional coach at Health Sciences High and Middle College (HSHMC), uniquely integrating K-12 practice with teacher education.
Her research centers on literacy instruction for English language learners and children with disabilities, emphasizing assessment-driven differentiation of small group instruction. She specializes in teacher modeling techniques, effective grouping strategies, and writing pedagogy, with current work focused on diagnostic assessment to personalize classroom instruction.
Johnson received the Constance McCullough Research Award from the California Reading Association for her assessment research and the International Reading Association’s Celebrate Literacy Award for significant field contributions.
She teaches core SDSU courses including TE 930 (Teaching Reading/Language Arts) and TE 630 (Seminar in Literacy & Language Arts), while maintaining active K-12 engagement at HSHMC. Her publications span leading literacy journals and influential coauthored books on differentiated curriculum design and ELL instruction.
