Dr. Shaun Smith is an Assistant Professor in Human Geography and Spatial Planning at Utrecht University's Faculty of Geosciences. He coordinates an NWO-funded project examining the Water-Energy-Food Nexus in Cape Town, collaborating with South African institutions. His research focuses on cross-sector infrastructure governance, urban sustainability, and resilience in cities like Los Angeles, Maputo, and Cape Town. He teaches in Urban Infrastructures modules and co-supervises two PhD candidates. Smith holds a PhD in Geography (2016) from Royal Holloway, University of London, with prior roles at University of Sheffield and UCL.
Education: BA (Hons) Geography (University of Plymouth, 2010); MSc Practising Sustainable Development (Royal Holloway, 2011); PhD Geography (Royal Holloway, 2016).
Research Interests: Post-colonial urban infrastructure challenges, infrastructural heterogeneity, energy justice, Sub-Saharan Africa energy transitions, urban resilience governance, and landlord-tenant relations.
Current Projects: Leading the 'Nexusing Water, Energy and Food to Increase Resilience' project (NWO-funded); involved in Transforming Infrastructures for Sustainable Cities (Utrecht) and UrbanHIT (NWO).
Teaching: Coordinates Urban Infrastructures module in Bachelor's/Master's programs.
