Dr. Sharvani Mahadevaraju serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Biology Department at St. Mary's College of Maryland, with her office located in Schaefer Hall 231. She uses she/her/hers pronouns and maintains an active research program alongside undergraduate teaching responsibilities.
Her academic credentials include:
- Master of Science in Zoology (Genetics Major) from the University of Mysore, India
- Doctor of Philosophy in Biology from Texas A&M University
Dr. Mahadevaraju's research investigates fundamental molecular mechanisms of sex determination and sexually dimorphic development using Drosophila melanogaster as a model system. Her laboratory integrates molecular biology, genetics, and genomics approaches to uncover evolutionarily conserved pathways governing gonad formation (ovaries and testes) and germ cell differentiation, with findings revealing critical differences even at the single-cell level. Current work focuses on identifying molecular drivers of sexual dimorphism relevant to human developmental biology.
As an educator, she demonstrates deep commitment to inspiring undergraduate students through clear conceptual explanations and fostering individual scientific curiosity in biological disciplines.
