Mark Van Doren is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on germ cell development and gonad formation, utilizing Drosophila melanogaster as a model organism to study the molecular mechanisms underlying these processes. He received his BA from Cornell University and PhD from the University of California, San Diego, followed by postdoctoral work at Whitehead Institute (MIT) and Skirball Institute (NYU Medical Center).
Research Interests:
Dr. Van Doren's work investigates three fundamental aspects of gonad development: germ cell development, gonad morphogenesis, and gonad sexual dimorphism. His lab uses genetic, molecular, and cell biological tools in Drosophila to understand how germ cells obtain their identity through intrinsic (germ plasm inheritance) and extrinsic (somatic cell cues) mechanisms, how germ cells interact with somatic cells to form properly shaped gonads, and how sex determination switches lead to sexually dimorphic development.
Recent Research Trends:
His publications show a consistent focus on Drosophila as a model system, with particular emphasis on sex determination pathways (Sex lethal, Doublesex, Fruitless), germ cell-soma communication, stem cell niche regulation, and the molecular basis of sexual dimorphism.
Scientific Recognition:
- Co-author on multiple studies funded by NIH and NSF grants
- Contributions to understanding evolutionarily conserved sex determination mechanisms
Lab Mentoring:
Dr. Van Doren has mentored numerous graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom have gone on to academic positions (e.g., Matthew Wawersik at William and Mary, Stephanie Le Bras at University of Rennes, France) or research roles at institutions like NIH, Carnegie Institute for Science, and University of Washington.
