Dr. Sharon Pelech serves as Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs and Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge. A former secondary science teacher with 18 years of classroom experience across the Northwest Territories, Northern Alberta, and Calgary, she bridges theory and practice in her academic work.
Her academic credentials include:
- Bachelor of Education (BEd) from the University of Alberta
- Master of Education (MEd) from the University of Lethbridge
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Calgary
Dr. Pelech's research explores the dynamic interplay between Science Education, Ecopedagogy, and Place Conscious Pedagogy. She investigates how hermeneutic (interpretive) approaches can deepen understanding of curriculum and pedagogy, with a focus on beauty, aesthetics, and ecological consciousness in science classrooms. Her work challenges traditional rationalized educational experiences by advocating for contemplative practices and attunement to local environments.
A review of her recent publications indicates a consistent trajectory in place-conscious science education. She examines how pedagogical approaches rooted in specific places (e.g., gardens, walking, local landscapes) foster student agency and ecological reciprocity. Her scholarship increasingly integrates indigenous perspectives and critical theory to develop transformative educational frameworks that resist decontextualized learning.
