Sharon Koppman is an Associate Professor of Organization & Management at The Paul Merage School of Business, University of California, Irvine, with a joint appointment in the Department of Sociology. She joined the faculty in 2015 and is actively engaged in research, teaching, and editorial leadership.
Her educational background includes a PhD and MA from the University of Arizona and a BA from UC Santa Barbara.
Her research focuses on the sociological foundations of work in creative and knowledge sectors. She investigates how hiring, career trajectories, and inter-occupational collaboration are shaped by social factors in industries such as tech, science, advertising, and music. Her work integrates organizational theory, sociology of culture, and studies of inequality.
Recent publications analyze career distinctiveness in corporate advancement, gender dynamics in creative collaboration, and class-based barriers in Big Tech internships. These works reflect a strong focus on inequality, innovation, and social structure in modern work environments.
