Sharon Erickson Nepstad is a Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Associate Dean for Student Success at The University of New Mexico's College of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on social movements, political sociology, the sociology of religion, and peace studies. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Colorado (1996).
Her work examines the role of religion in activism, nonviolent resistance strategies, and the dynamics of revolutionary movements. Notable books include *Nonviolent Revolutions* (2011), which won the ASA's Outstanding Book Award, and *Religion and War Resistance in the Plowshares Movement* (2008), awarded the ASA's 2009 Outstanding Book Prize. She also authored *Catholic Social Activism* (2019), tracing progressive Catholic movements in the U.S.
Nepstad's research explores how social movements influence public opinion, the impact of religious institutions on activism, and the conditions under which nonviolent campaigns succeed or fail. She teaches graduate courses on qualitative methods, social movements, and the sociology of religion.
Her recent scholarship includes analyses of the George Floyd protests' impact on public attitudes toward political violence (2022) and agency-centered approaches to understanding social movement repression (2023). She has advised numerous graduate students and serves as a leading voice in civil resistance studies.
