Hank Johnston

Hank Johnston is Professor of Sociology at San Diego State University and recipient of the 2023 John D. McCarthy Award for Lifetime Achievement. His research analyzes cultural dimensions of social movements, nationalist mobilizations, and nonviolent resistance globally.

He directs Mobilization: An International Quarterly journal and Routledge's Mobilization book series. Research employs discourse analysis to examine protest dynamics in authoritarian states and democratic contexts, with recent work on MAGA movement cohesion and framing methodologies.

Teaching: Nonviolence and social change, political sociology, and social movements.
