Sharla Biefeld

Sharla Biefeld is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Alabama, affiliated with the Center for Youth Development and Intervention (CYDI) and leading the BODY Lab. Her work examines how bodily experiences influence social interactions and development. She holds a PhD and MS in Developmental Psychology from the University of Kentucky and a BA in Psychology and Women and Gender Studies from the University of Texas at Austin.

Research Focus: Dr. Biefeld investigates discrimination, peer-based SOGIE harassment, body image, and intersectionality. Her work bridges developmental psychology with applied concerns like healthcare access and school policies, emphasizing how structural and cultural factors shape marginalized groups' experiences. Current projects explore adolescent harassment dynamics, weight bias, and reproductive health equity.

Key Contributions: Her research highlights disparities in sexual harassment perception among adolescents, challenges stereotypes surrounding body types and race, and advocates for inclusive policies in education and healthcare. Notably, she has developed frameworks linking ecological systems theory to sexual harassment prevention.

Labs & Initiatives: Leads the BODY Lab studying body-related social experiences and co-directs CYDI’s youth-focused intervention programs. Active in implementing rural healthcare initiatives, including postpartum contraception access in New Mexico.
