Shannon Withycombe is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of History at the University of New Mexico. Her research focuses on reproductive justice, gender, medicine, and the intersections of race and health in U.S. history. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2010), alongside an M.A. (2005) and B.A. from Mount Holyoke College (1998).

Research Interests:
Withycombe explores the history of reproduction, gender, and medicine, particularly through the lens of miscarriage, eugenics, and medical misogyny. Her current project examines prenatal healthcare’s early 20th-century development, shaped by racist biology and eugenicist frameworks.
Publications:
Her work bridges academic and public spheres, appearing in outlets like the Journal of Women’s History, Washington Post, and Nursing Clio. Recent publications address infant mortality disparities and the historical roots of modern healthcare inequities.
Professional Engagement:
She has been invited as a guest speaker at Brigham Young University, University of Wisconsin, Texas Tech University, and UNM Health Sciences Center, discussing her research on prenatal care and infant mortality studies.
Teaching:
Teaches courses on women’s health history, reproduction, modern medicine, and the history of disease in the U.S. and Southwest.
